Phuket, 04 December 2010 – The 2010 King’s Cup Regatta has scored a century for the second successive year with 100 boats already registered. Sailors from almost every corner of the globe are making their final preparations and a huge diversity of nations will be represented including China, Australia, Russia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Germany, the United Arab Emirates and, of course, Thailand.
They are attracted to the King’s Cup Regatta by the event’s well established reputation as the most prestigious regatta in the region and by Phuket’s increasing appeal as a world class marine lifestyle and yachting destination.
The first King’s Cup took place in 1987 to mark the 60th birthday of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyedej and the Regatta has been held in the first week of December ever since.
A handful of predominantly local sailors took to the water for the inaugural event 24 years ago but today the Regatta attracts an enormous fleet which is stretched across more than ten different classes.
This year some old rivalries will be renewed in the Racing Class with Ray Roberts on Evolution Sails and Neil Pryde of HiFi set to gohead-to-head. The two are currently tied in the Asian Yachting Grand Prix meaning that whoever gets the better of the King’s Cup action will leap into the lead.
Flying the flag for Thailand will be the three Thai Navy boats in the IRC 2 class but they will face competition, as always, in the shape of the boat which was previously known as Madame Butterfly but is now called Team Sea Bees.
There is much more to the King’s Cup than elite sailors doing battle and this year the Bareboat Charter class will be contested by more entrants than any other. The contestants are often unfamiliar with their chartered boats making this one of the most intriguing classes in the entire regatta.
In 2010 the King’s Cup will be entering the multimedia era with the aid of Sail.TV. The UK based company is set to upload daily updates from Phuket which will give sailing fans all over the world unprecedented access to Asia’s premier sailing event.
Kevin Whitcraft, President of the 24th Phuket King’s Cup Regatta Organizing Committee, is delighted to see the event going from strength-to-strength after almost a quarter of a century, “The King’s Cup Regatta is widely regarded as the best regatta in Asia and sailors from all over the world keep coming back year after year. The event also has tremendous benefits for the community. Last year 1,000 participants spent an estimated 40 million Baht providing a much needed boost to businesses and the local economy,” he said.
The Phuket King’s Cup Regatta runs from December 4th – 11th 2010 under the Royal Patronage of His Majesty the King. The Regatta is organised by the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta Organizing Committee under the auspices of the Royal Varuna Yacht Club, in conjunction with the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, the Royal Thai Navy and the Province of Phuket.
