The US$190,000 Phuket Thailand Open powered by PTT, last stop on the Swatch-FIVB Women’s Beach Volleyball World Tour, which is being held on Karon Beach, Phuket from 2 – 7 November 2010, has developed into Asia’s leading festival of beach volleyball, thanks to a plethora of supporting events being staged alongside the professional tournament.
Besides the professionals, several hundred amateur beach volley players from around the globe and here in Thailand will be participating in a number of supporting events. On the international side ‘Beach Volley Around the World ‘will be making its debut in Asia with European, Asian and Thai players all vying to be the Thailand champion in the international amateur competition, which will be staged over three days from 5 – 7 November.
On a more local level the popular Phuket Inter-Hotel Challenge is returning for a second year with more teams and cash prizes for this year’s winning teams, courtesy of Federbrau’s sponsorship. The hotel tournament kicks-off early with pool play amongst the competing teams on 31 October followed by the finals on 7 November.
In order to attract youth into the sport, there is a schools tournament between local schools on 7 November as well as beach volley camps for beginners on 6 – 7 November. Both events are supported by PTT Public Company Limited with former U.S. Olympic coach Bob Selznick presiding over the camps. He will also be assisting in training some of the Thai junior beach volley teams during the tournament in Phuket under a programme instigated by the Sports Authority of Thailand.
There is no entry fee to watch the matches on Karon beach and beach volley fans are also able to enjoy games and activities in the sponsor zone adjacent to the centre court, where food and beverages are also available.
