Once again an outstanding flotilla of power and sailing superyachts will stream into Phuket, Thailand for the Asia Superyacht Rendezvous to be held December 16-18, 2010, celebrating the 10th year anniversary of superyacht events in Asia.
This year superyachts arriving from the Mediterranean and other international waters will begin the event moored at a quiet little spot at the southern end of Phuket – Nai Harn Bay. An opening sunset cocktail party aboard the beautiful sailing superyacht ‘Silolona’ welcomes guests at the start of the Asia Superyacht Rendezvous and heralds the next day’s race event.
Sailing north to south, Superyachts will be accompanied by immense power megayachts (marking the course) as they race to Pansea Bay at Surin Beach, one of the island’s most beautiful locations and venue of host hotel, The Chedi Phuket.
The secluded and exquisite Chedi resort is also the site of the event’s famed “Model Boat-Building & Race – Team Challenge” following the day’s relaxed racing event. Appearing slightly bizarre to those new to the event, crews from the superyachts spread out into teams to design and build a model boat to sail on a trough – with a designated crew member using only his/her personal ‘wind power’. The race takes place amidst an opulent cocktail party, where everyone catches up with old friends and makes new ones, while cheering along their favorites.
The second race departs Pansea Bay Dec. 18th. After the race a festive evening beachfront “Crew Party” is held as Superyacht owners, captains and guests attend the elegant closing “Boat International Gala Dinner”. Held at the luxurious Chedi Phuket, the ‘Gala’ evening ends under the moonlight, as Asia Superyacht Rendezvous guests light ‘Chinese Lanterns’ on the beach and watch them slowly float up to the starry sky.
Organisers Gordon Fernandes, GM of Asia Pacific Superyachts and Charlie Dwyer, Captain of Yannekee Too superyacht, are excited about the upcoming 10-year celebration, enthusing: “The whole of the superyacht world is looking to Asia as the next great cruising ground and we are happily seeing a steady growth of yachts in the region.”
As more superyachts are attracted to the region and to the superyacht event, the social gathering has been increased from 2 to 3-days. A second racing day and more social opportunities have been added for owners, captains and crews. Gordon says, “It’s not often that you get motor boat owners mixing with sail boat owners and the three days will be filled with camaraderie and fun!” An invitation is extended to both sail and power superyachts worldwide, the only stipulation being the superyacht must be 30 meters LOA (100’).
The largest social gathering of both power & sail superyachts in Asia, Asia Superyacht Rendezvous attracts worldwide interest. The organisers note the growth is due largely to the generosity of Sponsors. Sponsors include: principal sponsor Feadship; Boat International Media; YACHTStyle; Merle Wood & Associates, Rolling Stock S.A.; Asia Pacific Superyachts and The Chedi Phuket.
Captain Charlie Dwyer enthuses, “The whole of the superyacht world is looking to Asia as the next great cruising ground! We are seeing a steady growth of yachts in the region – in general, owners and crews love Phuket and the surrounding areas. We plan to keep them entertained and keep the ‘Thai’ hospitality image strong! “This is the land of smiles and we need to make sure that this comes across to visiting crews, captains and owners.”
Gordon Fernandes says, “The growth potential for Phuket and the surrounding areas is massive as there are thousands of these ‘floating palaces’ in Europe – yet there are no berths left for them at marinas! South East Asia can provide this – and it’s another major reason to bring these yachts to Asia for the winter.”
Responding to the region’s boom and Phuket as a new yachting hub, organisers point out that not only do guests enjoy unequaled Thai hospitality in a relaxed and sociable 5-star setting – opportunities abound for fantastic holiday cruising following the event.
Many of the boats depart Phuket to continue their holiday on the crystal waters of the Andaman seas. Supported by warm Thai hospitality and excellent professional services – superyacht owners, captains and guests can experience a region unlike any other, with dozens of uninhabited islands and quiet anchorages of stunning topography and natural beauty.
Presenting a beautiful locale for the Asia Superyacht Rendezvous, Surin Beach on Phuket is becoming known as an iconic Asian island getaway for the rich and famous to come to unwind. The allure of Surin, awarding complete privacy in an exotic Asian destination within a growing ‘Asian Rivera’ and the surrounding Andaman region, offers incredible choices. The region is consistently rated as one of the world’s greatest sailing and cruising, diving and golfing playgrounds… plus there are superb beaches and natural wonders to explore. Phuket is the perfect location for the 10th year anniversary celebration of the Asia Superyacht Rendezvous.
