Video & photos: New digs at Patong

Would you like new digs on Patong Beach? Do you dig Patong? Do you want to dig for gold in Patong? Do you dig your heels in over high prices in Patong? Want to dig up some dirt in Patong? Do you want have a dig at the government in Patong? ….. any more suggestions? Well these mechanical digger beasts could help.. they were digging up more sand from further out, to pile up nearer the shore, almost all the way along Patong Beach, last week, to apparently “beautify the water and raise the sand on the beach”, the Deputy Mayor told Phuketindex. Most tourists were a bit confused to see the beasts. They still prefer the real beauties on the beach. Do you dig it?

Seriously though, these photos show a beautiful effect after the digging, with a higher softer level above the main flatter tide line: so those at the back get a clear view over the heads of those in front – sort of like in a theatre, with the expensive seats at the back and cheap (or free) seats in the front!

However some Patong tourists still prefer to dig their own holes (or baths) in the sand:

on “December 15, 2010 at 5PM Colorful parades with attendances more than 1,000 person and Opening Ceremony Phuket Carnival at Patong 2010 at Bangla stage.

On December 16 2010 0800AM Saving the environment activities at Patong beach as follows: – Diving for garbage (Under water clean up) – Walk rally – Sports for fun on the beach – Patong beach clean up.”

I noticed there are 4 waste bins for general/organic x 2/recycling rubbish near Soi Bangla & the beach, which is nice, but may not be enough for the clean up and rubbish nearby:

While on the way out of Patong, I also noticed the ‘Patong City Gateway’, for which we at Phuketindex first revealed the plan back in May, has finally been dug out of the green hillside, lit up and looking ready to also officially open on the same day as the Carnival starts. But you still cannot stop a car there, so be careful if you take your eyes off the hilly curvy road, otherwise you’ll dig your own grave there!
