Health Food 101, presented by Good Karma Health Food Store, was held on March 29 in Phuket at The Book Café in Nai Harn. Health Food 101 was an introductory workshop on health food and vegan-raw food preparation. Conducting the workshop was Sylvie Yaffe, a vegan raw food consultant Based in Phuket, Thailand. Sylvie said, “The focus of the workshop was to educate that regardless of what we eat, we are informed and educated about our food choices.”
She explained how GMO, genetically modified organisms (food) have infiltrated the global food supply, the dangers and side effects of MSG (monosodium glutamate) and aspartame and how HFCS (high fruit course corn syrup) has been proven to cause belly fat.
Samples of nutritional labels were also discussed and included points about how low fat processed foods are often more unhealthy then regular unmodified foods. Ingredients were looked at closely, as an example,
an all-bran cereal whose ingredients included caramel colouring.
Participants also learned how to open a coconut, something that most people had never tried, or at least never successfully accomplished. Samples of a vegan, creamy mango shake and nut-cheese cannelloni were also distributed with the highlight being raw-vegan truffles, compliments of Chef Bryan of Re Ka Ta Restaurant. Pura Organic also provided some organic produce and their Managing Director, Martin Smetsers, who was also attending the wokshop, spoke about organic produce in Phuket.
The free community event was standing room only with over 35 people in attendance. Good Karma Thailand will be holding regular events around the island.
