On 27th September 2012 at Suiboontong (Lorlhong) Shrine , Mr.Jamrean Thipayapongtada – Vice Governor of Phuket together with Mr.Prasert Fakthongpol – President of Phuket Shrines’s Association, Mrs.Urairat Lersakanusorn – Director of Phuket Culture Office Religion Department, Mr.Chanchai Duangjit – Director of Tourism Authority of Thailand Phuket office, Dr.Prapornsri Narinrak – Associate Phuket Public Health, Pol.Col. Arun Klewwatee – Phuket Provincial Police Deputy Commander and relevant departments held a press conference to announce the “2012 Phuket Vegetarian Festival.”
Mr.Jamrean said that “The 2012 Phuket Vegetarian Festival held from 15th – 23rd October 2012 is held to preserve Phuket’s culture and also to promote tourism in Phuket. This year will see a parade of honor, to commemorate His Majesty the King’s 84th Birthday, the Queen’s 80th Birthday and the Crown Prince Siam’s 60th Birthday Anniversary. The parade will be on Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at 16:00 pm. Also I order the relevant agency under the Ministry of Commerce to take care about the price of vegetables, fruits and other foods to prevent exploitation of consumers. If find someone who contravenes this order we will implement the laws strictly.”
Mr.Chanchai said “Phuket Vegetarian Festival will have more than 100,000 Thai and international tourists come to Phuket, most will be from Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, China and Australia. It is expected that the money generated from the event will be in the region of 550-600 million baht. This year, the Tourism Authority of Thailand has invited visitors to come to see this great Phuket tradition.”
Mr.Prasert said “This year the festival will be attend over 20 shrines and joined by 3,000 spirit warriors. This year the shrines will have a more restricted use of weapons and will be more aware about third-parties coming to the procession”.
