Phuket Police announce plans to improve tourists security

On 2nd July 2012 at Phuket City Hall, Police Chief of Phuket Pol.Maj.Gen. Chanasit Watanawarangkun, announced a plan to improve the security of tourists visiting the island.

The first action will be to increase police checkpoints and add more officers to the check points currently understaffed. They also ask for the cooperation of Phuket people in assisting in monitoring the safety of the tourists.

It was also announced that Phuket Provincial Police also plan to link together both the local government and private sector CCTVs that are currently in operation around the island. The CCTVs are already installed and need to be connected to the same server.

One of the man issues Phuket has is that there are not enough police officers. The police are allocated based on population registration. Phuket is recorded as having only 3 districts and its population is not recorded accurately. Unfortunately, it is true that there are a many unregistered people living here.

It is also the police’s aim to increase the number of police stations by opening two new stations in Karon and Vichit, a project which is currently ongoing.
