On 14th May 2013, the first day of student’s new term, Phuket Governor – Maitree Intasut visited a Pawn Shop in Phuket Municipality to meet with the shop’s workers and customers, and to check the methods the shop used to check the property that people bring to pawn shops.
Khun Maitree said “As it is the first day of the school term, many parents bring items to pawn shops to raise some money to help pay for their children’s education. We have asked that Phuket’s pawn shops are given a further 50 million baht to help with the demand and this is currently awaiting approval. During the opening of the school term, especially in the month of May 2013, there will an increased of about 20 percent of people looking for financial help from pawn shops.”
“It would appear that 99% of the items brought in have been gold, along with hand tools and electrical appliances. The idea of the pawn shops is help provide some income to those people who earn less” he added.
