On October 8, 2013 at the Sanamchai Field, Sheikhul Islam Office Representative – Mr. Aroon Boonchom presided over the opening of the Hijri Year 1435 Fair. Phuket Governor Maitri Inthusut delivered a welcoming speech while PPAO Deputy Chief Executive – Mr. Soratham Jinda gave a briefing speech on behalf of PPAO Chief Executive Mr. Paiboon Upattising. Attending the ceremony were PPAO Executives, PPAO Council Members, PPAO departmental heads, guests, relevant sectors and Muslims and Buddhists from the Phuket province.
Briefing the public, Mr. Soratham said that the event, which took place on November 8 & 9 2013, was held with cooperation from PPAO, Phuket Primary Education Office and the Yateem TV station. The aim of the fair was to give Muslim people from Phuket and neighboring provinces a chance to participate in an exhibition and understand the history of Islam and for the general public to be given information about the history and culture of Islam and to promote community activities.
PPAO allocated a budget of 900,000 baht for the fair which included an exhibition about the history and origin of Islam, along with stalls by various organizations including PPAO Hospital, Phuket Cultural Center, Extra-Curricular Education Center, Islamic Bank of Thailand, Al-Islamiya Cooperatives, Muslim Withaya School Phuket, Mukarom Mosque Bangtao, Community Tourism Network, and Rajabhat University. In addition there were lecturers by Yateem TV, activities for young people, stalls selling goods and books about Islamic teachings, and Halal food, among others.
Mr. Aroon from Sheikhul Islam Office said “The activities included at the fair reflect the vision of the organizing committee who strove to promote and revive the Islamic culture, ethics and religious teachings for the public to follow. I personally regard this as a good omen, which will raise awareness and appreciation of the uniqueness of Islam among young people growing in a multi-cultural society such as Phuket. Islam is an intricate religion derived from the teachings of Allah, which demands that observers follow strict rules to find their own path to Allah’s heaven.”
Mr. Maitri revealed that he was delighted that PPAO regarded the Hijri Fair as being one of the important events of the province. He thank PPAO, Phuket Islamic Committee, Phuket Primary Education Office, religious institutions and other organizations who made this fair a success and gave an opportunity to Muslim people in Phuket and from neighboring provinces have to study the origin of Islam and its teachings presented as a complete package by this exhibition. He admired and was thankful to all sectors that have contributed support in the form of finances, knowledge and technical help towards the success of this important event.
