On 28th August 2012, Deputy Mayor of Phuket, Mr.Kawee Tansuktanon, a representative from Phuket’s Office of Tourism Authority of Thailand, and a representative from Phuket’s Cultural Network Organization together issued a statement about the “Miracle of faith – Value of Gratitude” parades which to be held on Sunday 2nd and Sunday 9th September 2012. The parades are held every year to preserve and promote the local tradition of the “Por Tor Festival”.
Mr.Kawee said “The Por Tor Festival is a tradition of the local residents, which has held its legacy for many generations. The festival is held adhering to the belief that in the 9th lunar month of the Chinese calendar spirits will return to visit their relatives. The Phuket-Chinese residents will make offerings to the spirits of their ancestors. The festival has one famous feature, in the form of red turtle cakes. The Chinese believe the turtle is the sign of a healthy and long life, whilst the colour red brings good luck.”
This year’s Por Tor Festival falls from September 2 – 15 2012. The event will feature traditional markets on Ranong Road and at the Por Tor Kong Shrines at Baan Bangneaw.
At 10.00 am on Sunday September 2nd 2012 a parade will begin from the Her Majesty the Queen Sirikit 72nd birthday park, also known as Dragon Park, and will pass through Thalang road, Yaowarat Road, Phang-nga Road, Chartered Bank 4 Junction, Phuket Road, Rasada Road and will reach Ranong Road’s Phuket Downtown market s at 12:20 am.
On Sunday, September 9, 2012 there will be a second parade which will begin at 9.00 am from Saphan Hin and pass through Phuket Road, Kra Road, Takuatung Road before arriving at Por Tor Kong Shrine, Baan Bangneaw.
