Phuket candlelit for Buddhist Lent

Phuket candlelit for Buddhist LentOn 22th July 2013, Phuket City Municipality, led by Phuket City Mayor – Somjai Suwansupana, held candle giving ceremonies to various Buddhist temples around the island including Wat Mongkol Nimit, Wat Kajorn Rangsan, Wat Jaroen Samanakrit, Wat Thavorn Kunararm, Wat Vichit Sungkaram and Wat Samkong, to mark Buddhist Lent Day .

Following a candle procession, the candles are then given to the temples. Along with the offering of candles, Buddhist devotees also offer food and yellow robes to the monks, and local residents to the temples give flowers to the monks, who then take them to pay respect to Buddha’s footprint situated in the temple.

Khun Somjai said “In order to observe Buddhist Lent, Buddhists usually perform merit making, giving alms to monks, attend sermons and participate in candlelight processions, They also strictly observe Buddhist ethics, especially on holy days. We believe that offering candles to monks will mean light will also brighten up our futures.”
