On the evening of Sunday 17th November 2013, Andara Resort & Villas, their guests and residents celebrated the spectacular annual Loy Krathong festival in true Andara style with a very special Loy Krathong Festival of Lights event held at the properties Silk Restaurant overlooking the resort’s main swimming pool and the Andaman Sea.
Held on the full moon night of the 12th lunar month, Loy Krathong is a time to pay respects to Buddha and thank the Goddess of Water, Phra Mae Khongkha. The festival’s name translates as ‘floating basket’, and each year thousands of krathong floats are released along Thailand’s waterways, adorned with candles, incense and money. Wishes are made and as the krathongs drift away, this symbolises letting go of grievances and starting afresh. Thais believe that the longer the candle burns, the better next year will be. While an old proverb holds that when a boy and girl float a krathong together, they will be lovers in this life or the next.
During the course of the evening guests marked the Loy Krathong festival with a traditional Thai buffet, after which they were entertained by live Thai classical music, cultural performances and a Miss Noppamas beauty competition. Each guest also received a Loy Krathong which they launched on the pool outside the restaurant in observance of the celebration.
