On November 25th, at Phuket Merlin Hotel, Dr. Jessada Jongpaiboonpattana, the Director of Wachira Phuket Hospital, presided over the opening of a project to campaign against violence in women and children. Rewat Areerob, an MP of Phuket, Rabiabrat Pongpanit, the President of Warm and Happy Family Promoting Association, Jiranan Jiamjaroen, Head of Phuket Children and Family Shelter, and representatives from related government and private sectors attended the event.
Dr. Jessada said violence in families was a problem that often happens in society and it had been getting worse everyday. The reasons for violence in families were economic problems, social problems, bad environment & teaching in families, alcohol, culture and beliefs, and inequality between men and women.
To prevent the violence, there must be seriously participation between every sector in the community to create a network against the violence as well as to provide services for women and children including medical, legal, social welfare and against violence in family service. This would help the victims, who mostly did not know much about law and how to ask for assistance.
Moreover, the violence victim protection act 2007 is used to help the victims from violence, however most Thai citizens still didn’t understand this act. Wachira Phuket Hospital and its alliances would provide services to help prevent the problem in Phuket community.
