On March 16th, 2010, at the conference room of Phuket Provincial Hall, Wichai Praisa-ngob, the Governor of Phuket, presided over a meeting of the Committee of Phuket Land Traffic Management. The other government officers who attended this meeting were Teerayuth Aiumtrakul, a Vice Governor of Phuket, Paiboon Upattising, the President of Phuket Provincial Administrative Organization (PPAO), Wichit Nimitwanich, the Director of Transport and Traffic Systems Promotion Division (TTSPD), representatives from local administrative organizations, other government offices and private sectors.
The main agendas of the meeting were to discuss the ways to carry out the construction of a light rail system around Phuket, consideration of capital source which government offices will take responsibility for in this project, and discussion with representatives from local administrative organizations to see if Phuket really needs the light rail project. In addition, the committee also followed up about other traffic and transportation plans that help promote the island’s tourism.
Wichai mentioned that to promote Phuket tourism, the provincial government had considered the light rail project since it can not only facilitate tourists in transportation but it would also help to make a better image of the island.
