On January 12th, at Soi Rommanee, Thalang Road, Phuket, there was a press conference on ‘the 12th Chinese New Year and Phuket Old Town Festival 2011’. Somjai Suwansupana – the Mayor of Phuket City Municipality, Bangornrat Shinapryoon – the Director of Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Phuket Office, Dr,Kosol Tang-uthai – the president of Phuket Peranakan Association, Asst.Prof.Pranee Sakulpipat – the Vice President of Phuket Peranakan Association, and Yindee Masoonthorn – the President of Old Phuket Town Community and other related people were there to talk about the preparation for the event.
Chinese New Year and Phuket Old Town Festival is an annual event held to promote tourism in Old Phuket Town and to make people realize the importance of preserving Phuket’s original architecture, Sino-Portuguese buildings with shady arcades, and original ways of life. This event directly reminds the owners of the buildings in the old town area to renovate or to fix their properties as they are unique and valuable heritage of the island.
This year, the event will be held on February 8th-10th 2011, in the area of Old Phuket Town: the Queen Sirikit Park (near TAT Phuket), Thalang Road, Soi Rommanee, Krabi Road, Phang Nga Road, and Thepkrasatri Road. On February 8th, the Kuan Yin’s stamp brought from China and Kuan Yin statue from Pud Jor Shrine are brought to be worshipped in the area of the Queen’s Park. Everyone is welcome to worship these holy items. Then at 4.00 p.m. there will be a street procession from the Vocational College to the park to honor H.M. the King Bhumipol. The event’s grand opening will be at 7.00 p.m. in the area of the Queen’s Park.
On February 9th 2011, at 7pm, the Phuket Municipality and TOT Wi Fi service will also be officially launched in the area of the Queen’s Park.
There will be many free activities in the event including an Old Phuket Town Photo Competition, light & sound shows, local food and souvenir stalls, stage performances from Phuket and China, Ko Jan traditional boats, a traditional stamp producing demonstration, and a trip to shines in Phuket town by Potong cars or original Phuket public transportation vehicles.
