On June 4th 2010, Mr. Thaworn Senneam, a Deputy Minister of Interior, said after a discussion about preventing Phuket car and motorbike accidents, that the Phuket model, which is a project of Phuket Provincial Police to encourage people to wear helmets while they are on motorbikes, was a good way to decrease accidents on the island. From July 1st, all bike-drivers and passengers in Phuket had to wear helmets; otherwise they would be fined by the police.
Thaworn commented that Phuket model was an excellent example to make people know how important wearing helmets are. He suggested that other places should run projects like this as well because lots of people died and were injured by car and motorbike accidents every year. This damage also costs about two billion baht a year (one death could result in a four million baht loss for a Phuket family). He hopes that the project would be an effective way to save 60 people’s lives each year.
