On October 8th 2013 at Katina Hotel, PPAO Chief Executive – Mr. Paiboon Upattising presided over a certificate presentation ceremony which saw 75 successful participants of a Tourist Guide Course (English language local guides), taught by Phisanulok University in conjunction with the Department of Tourism of Ministry of Sports and Tourism Thailand awarded their certificates. The course, the very first of its kind, took place from July 31 – 20 August 2013. The PPAO Chief was joined at the ceremony by President of Phuket Professional Guide Association – Mr. Panompol Thamachatniyom and other distinguished guests.
At the ceremony Mr. Paiboon said “In the past Australian tourists ranked number one on our visitors list, followed by Europeans such as those from Scandinavian countries. But this year, we see 1 million tourists from China. You have great opportunities as we are blessed with a wonderful location. You have chosen to work in the province, which receives the most tourists in all of Thailand. You are considered Phuket’s “Tourist Warriors,” and as such please give accurate information to our visitors. I would like you to heed a warning, there are many drowning incidents in Phuket with up to 20 deaths a year. Last year we managed to rescue 1,500 tourists from our shores, and I am asking you to give strong warnings to tourists not to swim in waters with red flags. Phuket’s seas have strong undercurrents unlike anywhere else. Finally, I would like to thank all the lecturers for their hard work, and I wish the students all the success in life and in their important role working for the province of Phuket.”
