On March 31st, 2010, at Hilton Arcadia Resort, Smith Palwatwichai, a vice governor of Phuket, presided over the 2010 Annual Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Seminar held by the Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons of Thailand (SPRST) and the Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons of Thailand. There were 200 surgeons from Thailand, Singapore, China, and Taiwan attending the seminar.
Apart from the networking and meeting which was the main aim of the seminar, there was a lecture from Dr. Bahman Guyuron, an expert surgeon and the president of U.S.A. Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, plus exhibition booths of innovative medical technology from 30 companies such as Johnson & Johnson, 3M, and Neofarm.
Dr. Sanguan Kunaporn, the coordinator surgeon of the seminar, said that Phuket had been chosen to be the location for the seminar since it had the capacity both as a tourism destination and medical hub. Every year, around 4,000 tourists have come to Phuket to get operations such as aesthetic surgery, transsexual surgery, oral surgery, knee and other bone surgery. These tourists spend 10 times more money than normal tourists while they are staying on the island, as getting plastic surgery here is cheaper but just as good as surgery in their home countries, he said
The seminar emphasized about nose surgery, especially western style, because most Thai surgeons are only good at eastern style nose surgery. Information from Dr. Bahman really benefited all participants.
