Phuket sent out letter to confirm it is ready to cope with any tsunami

tsunamiPurit Maswongsa, the Vice President of the Phuket Tourism Association (PTA), said that after the PTA had urged the province to issue a letter to the world by internet disputing a false rumor about a predicted tsunami in Phuket, the Governor sent a letter to embassies, travel agents, and media in other countries to confirm that Phuket was ready to deal with any tsunami if a disaster happened.

The letter said that any tsunami would be an unpredictable event. However, Phuket had prepared rescue, emergency and evacuation plans in case it was ever hit by a tsunami again.

Purit added that many countries cancelled an announcement warning people not to travel to Phuket. The room reservation percentage was getting higher to almost 70%-80%. He estimated that the room bookings would reach 90% during late December 2010 – January 20th 2011. This was because the tourists were confident in travelling to the island again.
