Purit Maswongsa, the Vice President of the Phuket Tourism Association (PTA), said that after the PTA had urged the province to issue a letter to the world by internet disputing a false rumor about a predicted tsunami in Phuket, the Governor sent a letter to embassies, travel agents, and media in other countries to confirm that Phuket was ready to deal with any tsunami if a disaster happened.
The letter said that any tsunami would be an unpredictable event. However, Phuket had prepared rescue, emergency and evacuation plans in case it was ever hit by a tsunami again.
Purit added that many countries cancelled an announcement warning people not to travel to Phuket. The room reservation percentage was getting higher to almost 70%-80%. He estimated that the room bookings would reach 90% during late December 2010 – January 20th 2011. This was because the tourists were confident in travelling to the island again.
