Paiboon Upattising, the President of Phuket Provincial Administrative Organization or PPAO, said that PPAO planned to support the installation of speed cameras and related devices to check, record, and print out the police summons for the police to fine speeding drivers in Phuket. He hoped that this would help to change driving behavior of drivers and reduce accidents in Phuket.
Six sets of the speed cameras would be installed along two main routes of Phuket including Thepkrasattri Road (route 402) and the Bypass Road where the drivers drive very fast and many accidents occurred. The estimated budget to install these cameras is 10 million baht. PPAO would be the first local administrative organization in Thailand to invest in speed cameras to catch speeding drivers. It was one way to solve traffic accident problems since there were 200 people dying in accidents each year and the island also ranked in top place for the number of people injured by traffic accidents.
