Phuket Police encourage motorbike riders to wear helmets

On April 20th, 2010, Pol. Maj. Gen. Pikad Tantipong, the commander of Phuket Provincial Police, presided over a meeting of the police, related government officers and private citizens at the conference room of Phuket Provincial Police Station.

In the meeting, Pol. Maj. Gen. Pikad informed that the police will begin another project to encourage bike riders, both driving and sitting behind, to realize how much safer it is by wearing helmets.

The project will begin on July 1st, 2010. The police hope that after the project launches 100% of the motorbike drivers and passengers will wear helmets. There will be 50 police officers posted in the different traffic control areas around Phuket city, watching if any bike drivers or passengers don’t wear helmets. From May – June, the drivers without helmets will be fined while the passengers will be warned. On July 1st, everyone riding on motorbikes without helmets will be fined.
