On 10th March 2014, Phuket Governor – Maitree Intusut presided over the opening of a Traffic Management Centre for Patong hill at Tambol Tung Thong, Amphur Kathu. Also in attendance at the opening were Kathu District Chief Officer – Apisan Sa-ngasri, Kathu City Mayor – Chaianan Suttikul, Phuket Land Transportation Office Chief – Teerayut Prasertpol and Phuket Deputy Police Commander – Colonel Arayapan Pookbuakow.
Khun Apisan said “The purpose of this centre is to help relieve some of the traffic problems at Patong Hill. There are continuous problems with the flow of traffic both entering and exiting Patong caused by vehicles being stuck on the hill for one reason or another, and frequent road accidents, many of which involve large trucks and buses which are often over the legal weight. These accidents do not only put other drivers in danger but also the lives and property of the local residents. Furthermore, it also affects the image of Phuket as most media always wants to report on the road accidents. Most of the accidents occur at different but specific locations where the hill is too steep or winding. It is hoped that with this centre, which will adhere to international treaties, and be manned with approximately 50 staff every day, will help to prevent and resolve many of these issues.”
