Dr. Kosol Tangu-thai, the President of Phuket Peranakan Association, said that the association together with Phuket City Municipality, Phuket Old Town Foundation, and Phuket Old Town Community had been talking about promoting Phuket Old Town to be registered on the World Heritage List for many years. The case would be talked about again in the 23rd International Peranakan Conference held in Phuket soon.
The areas to be proposed for registering on the World Heritage List were on Thalang Road, Phang Nga Road, Dibuk Road, and Soi Rommanee. Items to be registered were the Sino-Portuguese buildings and local life style. However, it needed more talk with the related sectors including residents and preparation before the area was registered.
Asst. Prof. Pranee Sakulpipat, an expert in Phuket culture and history, said that there were people who agreed and disagreed with this. She believed that there would be further activity to support this and it needed participation from every sector.
