The Department of Corrections has chosen a 108 acre plot of land on Phuket on which to build a new prison. It is estimated the construction will cost around 1,000 million baht, and will provide Phuket with a much needed modern and international standard prison facility.
On 2nd August 2012 at Mission Hills, Phuket, Pol Gen Prasha Promnok – Minister of Justice together with Pol Col Suchart Wonganunchai – Director of Department of Corrections, Mr.Jamroen Thipayapongtada – Deputy Governor of Phuket, Mr.Rapin Nichanon – Commander of Phuket Provincial Prison, Mr.Worawut Songyot – Mayor of Srisoonthorn, Mr.Kittisak Sotraksa Srisoonthorn – Village Leader of Srisoonthorn and all relevant Departments held a meeting to discuss the construction of a new Phuket Provincial Prison.
The New Phuket Provincial Prison will be constructed on 108 acres of state land, numbered PK304, in the Srisoontorn area of Thalang district. A budget of over 1,000 million baht will be used for the construction, which when complete will house approximately 3,000 inmates. The new facility will replace the existing Prison, which now stands on an area of 47 rai in the center of Phuket City and comes under Phuket City Municipality. The prison is over 100 years old and now has a problem with overcrowding and is also in a bad state of repair. The existing facility now houses a total of 1,600 male and female inmates. It has been said that the old area will be turned into Government offices.
Pol.Col.Suchart said that the new Phuket Provincial prison will be the first of its type in Thailand.
