August 1st 2010 was the second day of a meeting of the Democrat Party, Members of Parliament (MPs), ministers, and invited sectors at Phuket Merlin Beach Hotel. The meeting was mainly held to discuss and brainstorm ways to solve crises in Thailand. The Democrat Party had invited people from different sectors including representatives from tourism businesses, traders, government officers, local administrative organizations and local leaders, to share their opinions about this issue in the meeting. These people together with the party’s board committee, MPs, and the ministers were separated into different groups. Each group brainstormed the idea of a ‘Phuket Model’ as it has a harmonious community, which could be later applied in the national conciliation plan. The MPs would be able to apply the model to solve problems in their area of responsibility as well.
The concept to brainstorm a ‘Phuket Model’ was to find out the strength of Phuket, challenges affecting Phuket residents, Phuket in next 5 or 10 years, and what people in Phuket want. This showed what the government should provide in order to drive Phuket forward. The meeting also showed that Phuket should have its own special governing system or Special Administrative Region (SAR) which would be compatible with the island’s development in the future. Phuket could take care of itself with clarity regarding revenue that will occur and create confidence in the investment world, while Phuketians know it is important to maintain the natural beauty and resources for long term tourism. People of all sectors need to participate in the development of Phuket.
