On May 10th, General Chalong Somjai presided over a Tsunami planning meeting, held by Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, at Metropole Hotel Phuket. Director-General of Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Wiboon Sanguanpong, Vice Governor Jamruen Tippayapongthada, and government officials from 6 Andaman provinces were in attendance.
Gen Chalong Somjai said, “6 provinces in the Andaman area could be affected by Sumatra earthquakes and aftershocks. The government is concerned about their readiness in dealing with a Tsunami. This meeting is being held to train officials for evacuation and unexpected problems that may arise.”
“After this training, officials will have more knowledge and skills in dealing with disasters. They will be ready to inform residents about how to evacuate. Moreover, they will be able to reduce any loss and injury,” Gen Chalong added.
According to Director-General Wiboon, the meeting was held because of the recent earthquakes, which have the tendency to occur more frequently. Therefore, to get government officials ready, training must be given. All officials can share experiences. More importantly, it is a way to build up confidence for Thailand.
