Phuket hits 80% occupancy over Songkran

(17 April 2012) Bangornrat Shinaprayoon, director of Phuket Office of Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), revealed that even though the earthquake hit Phuket and a tsunami warning was issued, there was still 80-90% occupancy in Phuket during the Songkran holiday. Phuket is expected to gain 1,000 million Baht since there were no incidents during Songkran.

Mr Somboon Jirayus, President of Phuket Tourist Association (PTA), said “Songkran 2012 went very well. 80% of rooms were occupied, 10% higher than last year. It reflects how Phuket is still a popular destination for both Thai and foreign tourists.”

“Not many tourists cancelled their trips to Phuket because of the Tsunami warning. There were still lots of tourists visiting Phuket, mostly Russians, Chinese, and Koreans” Mr Somboon added.
