On 7th Aug 2012 at Phuket Provincial Health Office Dr.Watcharaporn Sakulpong – Officer of Phuket’s National Health Security Office (NHSO) together with Mr.Supot Sangungpan – President of Phuket Community Institute, Mr.Jaroen Thinkhokeaw and members of Phuket Health Centre held a meeting to discuss how to improve the operation of the Centre.
Dr.Watcharaporn said “This meeting is to discuss about ways to improve the operation of the Health Centre and to update staff about what the Centre offers, as these things are always changing. We want to know about problems the Coordination Centre has experienced in its first year of operation and brainstorm ideas of ways to improve and solve any problems.”
“One of the current problems is we are only supposed to provide services for those who come with their national health insurance card, also known as the Gold Card. However, with the current increase in Phuket’s population, such as the labour workers from other countries, although they do not hold the relevant documents and our budget doesn’t cover the cost of their treatments, we are a health service so we have to provide a service for them. This means an estimated 20 people per day, sometimes 40 to 50, are being treated who our budget does not cater for” she added.
To solve this problem the National Health Security Office has started to register these people. However, many of them never come back to the Centre. It is estimated that Phuket’s current population is approximately four hundred thousand and it is hoped that the Centre will continue to be able to provide health care for those in Phuket who need it.
