On March 3rd 2011, Somkiat Sangkhaosutthirak, a Vice Governor of Phuket, and Awoot Wongsawat, the Assistant Director of the Phuket Commercial Office, Supatcha Boonpalit, acting in place of the Head of the Phuket Internal Trade Office, and other related government offices went to check the prices of goods in Tesco Lotus Phuket.
It was found that there was oil, eggs, sugar, and rice on the shelves. The oil price was 47 baht per bottle and there was enough for the people in Phuket. After finishing the check at Tesco Lotus, the vice governor and his team moved on to check the prices of the same goods in other department stores e.g. Supercheap Phuket.
The vice governor said “the local government has to check the quantity and prices of goods as there are some shops and department stores holding back goods from the market. This directly causes problems for the local residents.” He added that any department store found hoarding goods would be prosecuted.
