Phuket Governor limits elephant’s working hours

Phuket Governor limits elephant’s working hoursOn 12th February 2014, Phuket Governor – Maitree Intusut, Phuket Livestock Office Director – Wirasit Puttipairoj paid a visit to Phuket’s Siam Safari Nature Tours, an elephant camp on Khao Nak-Kerd in Chalong. The visit was part of Phuket’s drive on eotourism.

Khun Maitree said “We have come to this elephant camp today to ensure the business owners are taking the necessary care of its elephants, both in health and environmental aspects. There is no pollution problem in the area, and this area is the perfect place to be promoting ecotourism where the island’s nature is preserved and treasured, this also includes doing CSR projects in the area with local residents.

“We also need to ensure that the elephants are not abused or overworked during the high season, there are so many more tourists arriving at this time, and many of these want elephant rides which in turn mean the elephants have to work harder.

“Therefore, we request that the elephants work between 5-6 hours per day, which should be evenly spread between the morning and afternoon, and with a good break in between.”
