Phuket City to consider increasing waste fee

9 September 2009, 02.00pm, Phuket Governor Wichai Praisa-ngob chaired the meeting among the committees of Phuket’s solid waste management. Gathered Phuket City Mayor Somjai Suwansupana, local committees and concerning government office at the meeting room Environment Group, Phuket City.

The government cut off supporting budget of the year 2010 for waste management in Phuket. This make Phuket city lack of the budget using for the operation and maintenance. “Previously we got  43 million baht budgeted by the government but since 2010 we won’t have it anymore. According to the existing 191,857 tons of waste, the lacking of budget is equal to 228 baht per ton. So Phuket City is considering to adjust the fee from 300 baht each ton to be 528 baht per ton to solve such problem,” said Mayor Somjai.

In the meeting, they also discussed about the improvement of waste collection and transfer. Since there is complaining from people along the way the waste trucks pass that they are suffering from bad smell.
