On 3rd June 2013 at the Phuket Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, Phuket Governor – Maitree Intasut presided over the grand opening of “Phuket City Flood Centre” together with Phuket City Police Superintendent – Col Sermpan Sirikong and Phuket City Mayor – Somjai Suwansupana.
Khun Somjai said “Phuket municipality, especially areas such as Phuket City, Rasada and Vichit, have experienced flooding in the past due to expansion in the community, and an increase in population. The flooding has a great impact on the local’s habitat and the environment.”
“Having investigated the reasons for the floods it appears much of it is due to the areas drainage system. Preliminary reports showed that the size of the drains where insufficient and the directional flow of the drains is not based on the areas geography. In order to counter the floods and in order to fix the problem of flooding Phuket City Municipality has established Flood Centre which will deal directly with flood prevention and solving the problems” she added.
