The old Standard Chartered Bank, in Phuket Town, is to be refurbished and turned into a cultural museum to honor of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.
The empty bank building was also previously used as a police unit. Phuket City Mayor Somjai Suwansupana has said the building is over 100 years old. Due to its location on the side of the road the structure will need to be strengthened and improved. The utility systems will also need to be worked on.
When complete, the Sino-Portuguese building will be designated as the ‘Phuket Provincial Baba Museum’ The Phuket Peranakan Association are now looking for donations to help transform the building into a 50-million-baht cultural museum. It will also help support tourism in the old town area.
