On August 15th 2010, the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Phuket Office (TAT) together with Phuket Peranakan Association, Phuket City Municipality, and Phuket Old Town Community, hosted a Phuket traditional Baba wedding for 12 Thai and foreign couples.
Wichai Prai-sangob, the governor of Phuket and his wife, who is the president of Phuket Red Cross presided over the ceremony by being the VIP couple leading the rest of couples and wedding attendees in a procession along Thalang Road. The precession was watched with interest by the locals and tourists staying in the area.
The wedding began at 7.00 a.m. at the residence of the governor of Phuket. Then all couples went to TAT’s office to form the procession and moved through Thalang Road. After that they took pictures together in front of Phuket Thai Hua Museum. Then they went to worship the Chinese god called Pud Jor at Pud Jor Shrine. Finally all of them had lunch together at Phuket Country Club Goft Course before relaxing.
Bangornrat Shinaprayoon, the Director of TAT Phuket, said that this traditional wedding event was used as other selling point for Phuket cultural tourism. Formerly, Phuket had been a great choice for couples from many countries to be a location of their weddings and their honeymoon trips. A Baba style wedding was a new choice for them and it could help to stimulate the tourism market on the island.
Dr. Kosol Tanguthai, the President of Phuket Peranakan Association, said that the next Baba wedding would be held during June 10th-11th 2011 and as the ceremony would be the 11th, the Chinese instructor said that it was the best time of the year.
