Phuket agriculturists to have future with cobia culture

Director of Phuket Marine Biological Center Mr. Paiboon Boonliptanont revealed that cobia culture trial project after the tsunami at Baan Laem Hin, Phang Nga Bay, Takuatung, Phang-nga Province supported by The Norwegian Government, saw success.

The project is taken care by PMBC. Around 80 tons of two generations have been sold. Each of which values about 9-10 million baht. Now PMBC is working on the 3rd generation expected it can be sold in 7-8 months.

Cobia is a new economic aquatic animal with a great demand abroad and attracting a high price in the international market. Especially in Sushi industry, a kilogram of cobia can cost up to 115 baht. Market for cobia from Thailand now is European countries and Taiwan.

Department of Fisheries is proceeding to get budget to promote cobia culture.
