Tawichart Intarit, the Head of Phuket Cultural Office, said after a meeting with the Committee of ‘Phuket’s Safe and Creative Media Development’ that the committee had discussed about ways to prevent foreigners using religious objects, especially Buddha images, inappropriately.
He noticed that there were a lot of foreigners visiting and living in Phuket and recently in June the officers found a restaurant in Phuket owned by a foreigner who put the head of a Buddha image in their garden and made the image’s head as the base of a fountain. This showed there were foreigners who didn’t understand Thai culture that pays a lot of respect to Buddha Images.
Therefore, the committee had assigned related officers to keep an eye on residences or businesses owned by foreigners, to see whether they had displayed Buddha images or other religious items inappropriately.
Tawichart added that the committee would also be strict about obscene billboards located around Phuket. Finally, he asked owners of karaoke game shops or internet cafés to watch if there was obscene pornographic media carried in their places and help to suppress that media. The shops will need to install CCTV in future.
