The Thailand premiere of “Soi Dogs,” a documentary film about Phuket’s famous Soi Dog Foundation, will be held during the Phuket Film Festival at the Coliseum Paradise Multiplex Theatre, Phuket Town on 5 June, 2010 at 2pm.
“Soi Dogs,” produced by Ella Todd of Environment Films, United Kingdom, is very much a human story, capturing the tragedy, compassion, humor, excitement and triumph of the dogs rescued by the Soi Dog Foundation.
Making it, said Ms Todd, was a “wonderful strain” seeing dogs going through many types of adversity, yet still managing to find trust in people.
The 66-minute documentary, which is suitable for viewing by all ages, originally premiered at Riverside Studios, Hammersmith, London, where it received a standing ovation from the capacity audience. Its southern hemisphere debut in Melbourne, Australia in January raised more than $12,000 in donations.
The second Phuket Film Festival, running from 4 June to 13 June, 2010 expects to screen 30-40 films with a People’s Choice Award held for selected films. This year the Festival is partnering with B-side, an international web based protocol, for previewing Festival films and measuring audience reaction.
Festival director, Scott Rosenberg said the Phuket Film Festival “sure does want to grow to be like” the Cannes International Film Festival, probably the best known film festival in the world.
Commenting on “Soi Dogs,” John Dalley, who with his wife Gill, has run the Soi Dog Foundation for the last six years: “This documentary is like looking in a mirror for Gill and I. The day-to-day challenges facing us are beautifully told, as are the many facets of dealing with these loving and wonderful dogs.
“I commend Ella Todd for her vision, energy and compassion in committing herself to produce such a brilliant documentary.”
Ms Todd said: “For me making this documentary was a labor of love. Without the work of the Soi Dog Foundation there would be thousands of dogs roaming Phuket with little hope of survival. ‘Soi Dog’s is a combination human and animal story designed to inspire, not disturb.”
