Patong City Municipality, led by Mayor Pian Keesin, held a public hearing “The fact about Patong’s future that we have to share”. There were Patong City Municipality staff and representatives from different sectors including motorbike taxi groups, taxi groups, shopkeeper groups, etc, joining the event to present their opinions on Patong development.
Patong needs to be developed in its infrastructure system, environment conservation, traffic management, water pollution, life & proprty security, plus how to prevent exploitation of tourists, crimes, etc and the municipality would spend a budget of 250 million baht mainly on road construction & to manage the problems.
Moreover, an important issue that was mentioned at this event was a proposed Patong tunnel construction. Pian Keesin said it was vital to build the tunnel connecting Kathu and Patong because this was the best solution for traffic jams and accidents on the mountain road leading to Patong. From the survey, he claimed there were only 10 people in Mon village affected by the construction of the tunnel.
They worried that they would not get a satisfying expropriation rate. Therefore the mayor ensured that the expropriation rate would match the land prices in Patong. The mayor also stressed the construction investment that would be paid by the private sector or co-invested between private and government sectors.
