On the night of December 14th 2010, the Office of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation in Phuket, Kamala Sub-district Administrative Organization, and related organizations, launched in Kamala the first ever night time tsunami evacuation drill in Thailand. The drill was presided over by Weerawat Chanpen, a Vice Governor of Phuket. There were a lot of local residents, business people, students and some tourists, attending the drill.
It started at 8pm based on the simulated report of 9.0 Richter earthquake 10 kilometers deep under the earth of the Nicobar Archipelago 600 kilometers from Phuket. It was supposedly possible that a tidal tsunami wave could hit the shore of Kamala at about 9.00 p.m. so the National Disaster Warning Center sent a message to the Office of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation in Phuket to evacuate people away from the risky areas. The staff of Kamala Sub-district Administrative Organization announced the incident to the locals and tourists and evacuated people to the muster hall in Rachaprachanukroa 36 School.
During the evacuation, there was a simulated car accident. The police and staff of the Office of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation helped the injured people. After that, the police assessed the situation and reported to the President of Kamala Sub-district Administrative Organization to ask for assistance. The President and his team established the center to ask for further assistance from related organizations after the situation returned to normal.
After the evacuation drill, there was also a search for victims drill, as well as a drill of giving assistance to people stuck in trees and in cars.
The vice governor said that it was important to make people get used to the evacuation plan since there was an increasing frequency in earthquakes happening in many parts of the world including at night. The drill would be held at least twice a year. This first night time tsunami drill was not 100% comprehensive as it was hypothetical, but errors would be examined, and confidence among locals and tourists would increase. The President of Kamala Sub-district Administrative Organization deemed it very successful because they practised at night when it was more difficult.
