Recently, Niwit Aroonrat, a Vice Governor of Phuket, presided over the meeting of the 1st/2011 sub-committee of Phuket Land Transportation Management. The meeting aimed to plan and find out the way to solve traffic problem in Phuket as well as follow the road risky point improvement project.
There were the representatives from Traffic and Transportation Policy Office, related government sectors, local administrative organizations, private sectors, and specialists in traffic management and environment development attending the meeting.
In the meeting, Prajiad Aksorndharmakul, Head of Provincial Development Strategies, Phuket Provincial Office, informed the progress of Phuket light rail project that “After the meeting in March 2010 agreed that there should be the light rail in Phuket to solve traffic and transportation problem in 3 routes including Phuket International Airport – Chalong Roundabout, Bang Ku Junction-Phuket Town-Chalong Roundabout, and Phuket Town-Kathu-Patong , the province then submitted the project plan to the Ministry of Transportation to ask for the budget of 12,000-13,000 million baht.
The response from the ministry was that there is no budget for this project and suggested that this project should be run by the private sector. Later, in September 2010, Phuket Province allowed the private companies to study in the project possibilities and other related aspects. The two company interested to invest in this project were Pan China Construction Group and Ershisanya Construction Group. There was no progress report from the 2 companies. The province then asked them if they were interested in the project. The answer was yes.”
