Kamala chosen to have Phuket’s first night-time tsunami evacuation drill

kamala beachOn 2 December at the conference room of Kamala Sub-district Administrative Organization in Phuket, a working group committee meeting was held on evacuation plans & training people in tsunami risk areas; they chose Kamala as pilot place to prepare and rehearse before an actual practice at night for the first time in Phuket, at 8 p.m. on December 14th during an evacuation drill for a tsunami.

Wirawat Chanpen, a Vice Governor of Phuket, said the recent news about earthquakes in many parts of the world & many local rumors frightened people living nearby the coast. In Phuket, there are tsunami warning towers and each local administrative organizations in risky areas are required to hold tsunami evacuation drills at least twice a year. Moreover, the province assigned Kamala Sub-district Administrative Organization to host the island’s first night-time evacuation drill to train the residents and related government and private sectors in evacuating during the night.

The center of the drill would be at Rachaprachanukroa 36 School. There would be supposed news of a 9.0 Richter earthquake 10 kilometers deep under the ground in the area of Nicobar Islands, which are 600 kilometers off Phuket, on December 14th at 8.00 p.m. The tsunami warning will be announced by the National Disaster Warning Center at 8.10 p.m. and the tsunami would supposedly hit the shore of Kamala at 9.00 p.m. Therefore the residents living nearby the coast should evacuate to the multipurpose building of Rachaprachanukroa 36 School.

During the evacuation, there would also be a supposed traffic accident in front of the school and Kamala rescue team and police have to control the traffic, give First Aid to injured people and assess the situation before reporting to the President of Sub-district Administrative Organization. The president would then go to the muster point in the school and try to contact the provincial rescue team for further assistance, until the supposed situation returns to normal.
