On April 22nd, 2010, Bangornrat Chinaprayun, the director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Phuket and Chattan Kunjara Na Ayudhya, the Director of TAT New Delhi, India, led a board committee of India Tourism Business Entrepreneurs (ITBE) to meet Tri Akaradecha, a Vice Governor of Phuket, to discuss about the possibility that ITBE would hold its annual conference in Phuket later this year.
After the discussion, Vice Governor Tri revealed that ITBE was interested in three provinces in Thailand consisting of Bangkok, Pattaya in Chonburi, and Phuket, but they were worried about the current situation in Bangkok, therefore they came to see Phuket as the first potential location of the meeting in Thailand. Tri mentioned that he had promised the representatives from ITBE that if they chose to hold their conference in Phuket, local people would facilitate them the best accommodation, transportation, tour programs, security and other services.
Chattan said that there was a high possibility that Phuket would be selected as the location because the ITBE’s representatives believed that the island’s infrastructure and services would make their meeting impressive and successful.
The meeting could lead around 2000 Indian people to Phuket generating 400 – 500 million baht in turn-over for Phuket’s tourism business. It’s believed that after the meeting ends, Phuket may have a chance to welcome more visitors from India as well.
