On May 18th 2010, at the conference room of Phuket Provincial Hall, Teerayuth Aiumtrakul, a Vice Governor of Phuket, presided over a meeting of the provincial sub committee of the Anti-Human Trafficking Operations Centre to plan strategy for preventing human trafficking and help any victims in Phuket.
It was found that more there are more than 700 entertainment complexes in Phuket, yet only 364 of them request extension applications for licenses and some of them were suspected of offering prostitution services which is causing an increasing number of HIV patients in Phuket. Therefore, related government officers must keep a close eye on these places.
The HIV crisis in Phuket has made the province the highest for the number of HIV patients in the southern part of Thailand. Up until February, there were more than 6,000 HIV patients found on the island.
