Churang Wechprasit, the president of Phuket Pharmacist Association (PPA), said in a seminar called “Pharmacy’s Role in Birth Control in Phuket” held by PPA in cooperation with DKT Healthcare (Thailand) Co.,Ltd and MASALAB that every month there are 1 million contraceptives sold in Phuket. From the data collected by PPA, the number of Phuket teenagers using Emergency Contraception (EC) is increasing. Most of them are aged 17 -18 years old, yet the youngest are 13 years old.
In addition, last year there were increasing numbers of girls who got illegal abortions admitted into hospitals and girls who got abortions without permission from parents. These problems need to be solved by every sector in
Churang suggested that to prevent undesired pregnancy by teenagers, schools and families have to educate them not to have sex until they are of proper ages and teach them about protected sex.
