On September 11th 2010, Niwit Aroonrat, a Vice Governor of Phuket, presided over the opening ceremony of the ‘Pilot Cables Collection Project’. The project was held under cooperation between Phuket City Municipality, the Regional Electricity Authority, TOT Public Company Limited, CAT Telecom Public Company Limited, TT&T Public Company Limited, cable TV suppliers, and other communication companies in Phuket. On this occasion, a private company handed over 10 sets of street lamps to Phuket City Municipality as well.
The excess cable removal on 1.4 kilometres of Mae Luan Road began from Phuket District Office Intersection to Mae Luan – Wichitsongkram Junction. The unused cables were removed and the usable cables were arranged in a more orderly fashion. This road is the pilot or first road for better cable order in Phuket. The next roads that would have cables reorganized are Thepkrasatri Road, Phuket Road, Yaowaraj Road, and Wichitsongkram Road.
Apart from the cable reorganisation, Phuket City Municipality had been running the underground cable project by putting the cables on Thalang Road and Soi Rommanee into the ground. The municipality planned to do more on some parts of Thepkrasatri Road, Krabi Road, Dibuk Road, and Phuket Road in the coming December. It would also expand the underground cable project to cover all areas of Phuket Old Town and municipal areas in the future. However, the project takes time and a lot of budget.
