On November 28th, Paiboon Upatising – President of Phuket Provincial Administrative Organization, Wirat Makaew – Vice President of Mai Khao Sub-district Administrative Organization, staff members of Bangkok Hospital Phuket, and members from Phuket Cycling Club welcomed some Australian doctors, nurses, and medical staff who cycled from Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin to Phuket in a project called ‘Doctors and Friends Big Ride for Thai Medical Aid’.
The group of cyclists left Hua Hin on November 21st. After the first welcoming, together with the members of Phuket Cycling Club they rode further to Bangkok Hospital Phuket. Paiboon said the end of the cycling route in Phuket had showed its tourism capacity, especially in medical tourism, apart from its nature and culture. The island was ready in international standard centers of health.
Meanwhile Dr. Kongkiat Kespechara, the Director of Bangkok Phuket Hospital, said that a lot of Australian tourists come for medical trips in Phuket. The hospital had been working to promote health tourism in Phuket and consequently recently received the TAT Thailand Tourism Award of Excellence in Medical Tourism. He said that Australian cyclists were guarded by the hospital Mobile I.C.U. along their 600 kilometer journey to Phuket. He hoped that this project would help promote the medical capacity of Phuket to people in Australia.
