On October 11th, Sutthinee Poopaka, the Director of Office of Industrial Economics (OIE), presided over a seminar called ‘The way to establish an information center supporting cruise maintenance and boat construction in Phuket. The seminar was held in Phuket Merlin Hotel. There were many representatives from related sectors joining the seminar.
Sutthinee said that Phuket had a deep sea port and several marinas which are enough to welcome tourists coming on 1,300 cruises and ships sized between 30 – 100 feet. Therefore, the province should have a cruise maintenance and boat construction information center to serve the ship operators and group of tourists coming to Phuket by sea. It was estimated that there could be over 5,000 ships & large yachts travelling to Phuket each year.
OIE had assigned the Faculty of Engineering, Prince of Songkhla University to survey the way to establish the information center in terms of capacity and limitation of 30-100 feet sized cruise ship maintenance and construction in the Andaman area. OIE also listens to the opinions from related sectors before it would establish the center in this region.
