On February 19th 2011 at Phuket Merlin Hotel, Chuan Leekphai, the Ex – Prime Minister of Thailand, presided over the opening of the seminar namely ‘Baba Symposium 2011’ held Peranakan Association. There were a lot of honorable guests e.g. Rewat Areerob and Tossaporn Thephabutr, 2 representatives of Phuket, Somkiat Sangkhaosutthirak, a Vice Governor of Phuket, Pol.Maj.Gen.Pikad Tantipong, the commnader of Phuket Provincial Police, heads of government offices, and Phuket – Chinese citizens attended the seminar.
In the seminar, Dr.Kosol Tan-Utai, the President of Peranakan Association, expressed the concern about Baba citizens in Phuket that “It is over 100 year that people who are the descendant of Thai-Chinese citizens settling in Phuket. These people are called Baba or Peranakan (in other countries).
They have conserved their unique culture and traditions until today. However, there original way of life has been affected by the developing world. We are worrying that our descendants studying abroad might be able to help conserving our culture”.
