On December 16th, at the new Phuket provincial hall, Somkiat Sangkhaosutthirak, a Vice Governor of Phuket, presided over the 4th meeting in 2010 of the government and private sectors co-committee to solve economic problems.
Paiboon Upatising – the President of Phuket Provincial Administrative Organization (PPAO), Siripat Pattakul – the Head of Kathu District Office, Purit Matwongsa – Vice President of Phuket Tourism Association (PTA), Bamroong Sampaorat – President of Phuket Provincial Islamic Committee, Puripat Teerakulpisuth – Head of Marine Transportation Office 5 Phuket Branch, and representatives from related government and private sectors attended the meeting.
In the meeting Purit from PTA said that a rumour a tsunami would hit the coast of Phuket in late December affected the island’s tourism as well tourism in nearby provinces. Therefore the association suggested that the province should issue a letter to make people in Asia especially and Europe understand that Phuket was ready to cope with any possible tsunamis through warning systems and evacuations. The letter could raise confidence among the tourists as it had done in the past.
He added that the association would take responsibility for issuing the letter to create confidence among the tourists who were not sure if they would spend their vacation in Phuket.
