On 15th November 2012 at Phuket Provincial hall, Phuket Governor – Mr.Maitree Inthusut chaired a meeting to discuss issues within poor communities on the island. Also in attendance at the meeting were Dr.Sommai Preechasilp, Mr.Somkiet Sangkhaosuthirak, Mr.Prapan Khanprasang, Mr.Prajead Auksorntham, Mr.Phudit Raksarat, representatives from the Poor Network Organization, relevant agencies and members of the public.
The meeting was aimed at finding solutions to solve problems being experienced by the island’s poor communities, of which there are believed to be 28. The governor has promised to hold regular 3 monthly meetings to listen to the communities’ issues and also to monitor the progress of the solutions which have implemented from previous meetings.
The Poor Network Organization, which is composed of 25 community’s members, is a working group set up with the aim of restoring support systems to the island’s sea gypsy communities, creating and supporting a banking system for poor communities, creating a learning center, support surveillance and disaster assistance and to support the surveillance of Mangrove forests.
